About the Mammography Screening Program

In order to improve the early detection of breast cancer, the German Bundestag unanimously decided in June 2002 to introduce a quality-assured mammography screening program in Germany. This is because previous studies in other countries have shown that women can be prevented from dying of breast cancer by regular participation in the screening program. This effectiveness has not yet been demonstrated for any other method of early breast cancer detection. The mammography screening program is the first systematic cancer screening program according to European quality standards in Germany and the largest screening program in Europe.

The program for the early detection of breast cancer is aimed at over ten million women between the ages of 50 and 75 throughout Germany. It is carried out by physicians and radiological specialists in a total of 95 screening units. Regular certification of all screening units as well as comprehensive evaluation of the program’s processes and results by the Mammography Cooperation Group are designed to ensure that quality standards are met.

The mammography screening program is supported by the statutory health insurance funds (Spitzenverband Bund der Krankenkassen / G-KV) and the Kassenärztliche Bundesvereinigung (KBV).
